When you need a win to sneak in to the play-offs a fixture against a mid-table side with nothing to play for is what the doctor usually orders. What Bolton got in 2013 was a derby match against a side bearing a perennial grudge.

26th December 1985

It had been seven seasons since Bolton had played Blackpool and the smouldering 1970s atmosphere between the two sets of fans had very clearly not gone away. A Boxing Day reunion was on the fixture list at the end of 1985 and the police completely under-estimated the away support.

The Reebok was still in its infancy and Bolton had yet to record their first home win since moving to their new home. Aston Villa at home was next up – and my Villa supporting mate was making the journey from the Midlands to view his team at our new ground. It was to be an eventful day and not for the right reasons.

26th February 1994

It was the 1993/94 season and 10 of us had arranged to go down to Crystal Palace in a tranny van. Did we get to the actual match in question? Don’t be silly we spent most of the day lost and then involved in some melee in Dunstable.
